BINGHAMTON SOUTH SIDE COMMONS
The City of Binghamton appointed Shumaker Consulting Engineering and Land Surveying, D.P.C. (SCE) to provide professional services related to the design of a municipal common area within the heart of the Southbridge Business District. The South Side Commons will provide residents, business patrons, and visitors with parking for cars & service vehicles; clean, safe, interconnected pedestrian access to buildings (front and rear); an outdoor green space; public event space; and banners and artwork that reflect the vitality and creativity of the South Side. A new parking area with pervious asphalt for day parking and and short term pick up for local businesses and eateries was developed.

Access, parking and circulation was analyzed and implemented with the coordination of several properties with the commons area.
As prime consultant, SCE was responsible for development of preliminary and final design for this project. Key components included public participation and input, sustainable design practices, and comprehensive stormwater regulatory compliance with all city and state requirements.
This project addressed reconstruction of 2,000 L.F. of Vestal Avenue and 800 L.F. of South Washington Street. SCE’s scope of services included: replacement of water services; installation of a new 60” diameter storm sewer; utility relocations; pavement design; and traffic signal improvements.
